It was originally established by the French colonialists in 1947 to monitor National Highway 1A and was called Ba Doc. Later, the US army took advantage of its strategic location and declared it an “impregnable fortress” when they set up their own military base on the hilltop.

Vinh Moc Tunnels located in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. The tunnel system has a dome shaped structure measuring 0.9m x 1.75m, 2,034m long, with many branches connected to each other through a main axis 870m long. In the tunnel there are 13 doors, including 6 doors leading to the hill, 7 doors facing the sea. There are also 3 ventilation wells. This system was built to serve as a shelter as well as a living place for villagers during the war.
The Vinh Moc tunnels serve as an underground village and contain many essential features, such as resident water wells, rice storage, Hoang Cam kitchen, guard station, telephone station, hospital, operating room, house, midwifery, and bathroom.
